Lead the Way and Plan a Wear Red Day

National Wear Red Day is coming Feb. 5, 2010. But it takes just one person
to start Wear Red Day on any day of the year. Let that person be you!
Consider organizing a Wear Red Day at your workplace, with your
faith-based organization, at your community center or even in your own
home. Speak up. Inspire your friends, neighbors, coworkers and family
members to show their support for the fight against heart disease!

How to Celebrate

We've made it simple with our free, downloadable tools. Just sign up as a
Wear Red Day Coordinator and you’ll be able to use the tools anytime of the
year to host your own Wear Red Day event.

You can also celebrate Wear Red Day by:
•Getting your coworkers to join you in wearing red to work
•Asking the man in your life to wear something red
•Promoting healthy hearts with a heart-healthy meal for your friends and
family
•Using our Wear Red Day fundraising tool to reach out to friends and family
and donating proceeds to Go Red For Women.

Go Red For Women is the American Heart Association’s solution to save
women’s lives. Too many women die each year because they are unaware that
heart disease is their No. 1 killer. One in three women dies of this largely
preventable disease – that’s almost one woman every minute.

I can truly speak from my heart on the subject of heart disease because it
has affected me my entire life. It’s the one huge family health issue on both
sides, and it runs strong. It all started when my father suffered a heart attack
and was diagnosed with arterial sclerosis at age 37, which is the exact age I
am today.

Over the course of 30 years, he underwent several open-heart surgeries,
bypasses, stent, balloons, you name it. Caring for him throughout the years
and seeing firsthand how the disease affected our family made me want to
take my health into my own hands.

When I turned 30, I found a wonderful cardiologist and committed to going
every year for a checkup even though I was convinced I’d be the exception to
the family gene pool. Instead, I found out that I had a leaky heart valve. It’s
not a serious condition, but it reminds me how important it is to stay in tune
with my body.

Today, I read everything I can on healthy living. I make healthy choices for
myself and my daughters – I hardly eat fried foods, don’t smoke and stay
active. Even though my father lost his battle, he is still an inspiration to me
along with my beautiful girls and amazing husband. Together, we can bring a
voice to this silent killer and truly prevent heart disease—and I’m living proof.

I go absolutely, crazy red for my family, my daughters and my hubby.
WHY SPEAK UP?
Cardiovascular disease kills approximately 450,000 women each year, about one every minute.
While 1 in 30 American women die of breast cancer, about 1 in 3 die from cardiovascular disease.
More women die of cardiovascular disease than the next five causes of death combined, including
all forms of cancer. Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart
disease. Only 1 in 5 women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat. Heart disease
is largely preventable. In fact, 80 percent of cardiac events in women may be prevented if women
make the right choices for their hearts, involving diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking.
WHY GO RED?
Research shows that women
who “Go Red” are more likely
to make healthy choices. More
than one-third have lost weight.
Nearly 55 percent have
increased their exercise. Six
out of ten have changed their
diets. More than 40 percent
have checked their cholesterol
levels. One third have talked
with their doctors about
developing heart health plans.
